Purpose and scope
The Data Governance Specialist plays a key role in advancing the implementation and adoption of Husky’s enterprise-wide Data Governance framework and operating model. This role collaborates closely with business units, the Data Team, IT partners, and relevant external stakeholders to ensure consistent governance practices across the organization.
The position is responsible for driving and supporting data governance activities—including Business Intelligence (BI) governance, cross‑functional alignment, and initiatives aimed at improving data quality within core systems and business processes. Working with system owners and business users, the Data Governance Specialist will ensure that data quality requirements are clearly defined, documented, and translated into standardized processes that enhance the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of organizational data.
As a member of the Data Team, the Data Governance Specialist will directly support enterprise data initiatives and report to the Data Manager.
Responsibilities
- The responsibilities of the Data Governance Specialist include, but are not limited to:
- Lead the execution and ongoing enhancement of Husky’s enterprise-wide Data Governance program, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and data strategy.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive inventory of Husky’s core systems and information assets, including documentation of the teams, processes, and data flows associated with each.
- Establish and sustain clear ownership and accountability for corporate data systems and key data domains across the organization.
- Design, implement, and maintain data governance standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring they are embedded consistently and provide technical assurance for ongoing compliance.
- Partner with teams across Husky to operationalize data governance practices, fostering a culture of responsible data management and stewardship.
- Support the development and governance of the corporate taxonomy, establishing rules, naming conventions, and best practices for consistent use across platforms and teams.
- Align data governance activities with Husky’s information security strategy, ensuring data initiatives meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements.
- Apply expert knowledge to identify opportunities for improving data quality, including reducing redundancy, increasing reuse, and optimizing data flows.
- Continuously identify, assess, and mitigate data-related risks in accordance with Husky’s risk management framework.
- Oversee and support information stewardship activities, including data quality management, retention practices, and responsible data usage.
- Create, track, and maintain data quality metrics, ensuring they are measurable, actionable, and aligned to business needs.
- Lead the implementation and adoption of industry leading Master Data Management and Data Quality tools
- Identify gaps in existing data policies and standards and drive the development of new guidance to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
- Provide project support and oversight to ensure data governance and regulatory requirements are incorporated into planning, execution, and delivery of data-related initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Engineering, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Post‑graduate qualification in Information Management or Data Governance, or a minimum of three years of experience working in an information governance or data governance environment.
- Strong understanding of information management practices, including information lifecycle management, data modeling, master data management (MDM), business audits, and requirements gathering.
- Proven experience leading or significantly contributing to data governance programs, preferably in a complex or enterprise environment.
- Advanced knowledge of data governance principles, frameworks, and best practices (e.g., data ownership, stewardship, quality management, and metadata standards).
- Demonstrated ability to work with system users and stakeholders to elicit, analyze, and formalize business and data requirements.
- Familiarity with metadata management tools, cataloging platforms, and data lineage practices.
- Familiarity with industry leading Master Data Management and Data Quality tools.
- Strong analytical and information‑gathering skills, including interviewing, active listening, and critical questioning.
- Good understanding of IT security, data protection, and privacy principles, including how they intersect data governance.
- Working knowledge of Agile project management methodologies and their application in data-related initiatives.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all organizational levels.
- Exceptional writing skills, capable of producing clear and well‑structured requirements, specifications, and documentation.
- Ability to clearly explain and embed business process changes, data practices, and governance concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Strong stakeholder‑engagement skills, with the ability to champion and promote data governance across the organization.
- Self‑motivated and able to work independently within established project boundaries and governance frameworks.
- Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to respond effectively to shifting priorities and emerging data needs.
- Fluent in English; additional language skills are considered an asset.
