The Trade Compliance Specialist plays a key role in ensuring the organization’s compliance with global import, export, and security regulations. As a Trade Compliance Specialist, you will report to the Customs Manager and support in executing the company’s customs compliance processes, enhance operational efficiency, and drive continuous improvement across our global trade programs. The role partners closely with business units, engineering, supply chain, and logistics teams to maintain compliant and efficient cross-border trade operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the development, implementation, execution and continuous improvement of corporate customs compliance and security programs to align with global and regional regulatory requirements.
- Execute and communicate key customs procedures, ensuring the accurate and timely filing of import and export entries. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and customs brokers to resolve clearance issues and prevent shipment delays.
- Conduct research and determine Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) assignments, valuation, and country-of-origin determinations.
- Perform trade agreement qualifications, exclusions, duty refunds, and drawback claims.
- Participate in internal and external audits, assessments, and special projects.
- Perform transaction reviews to identify compliance gaps and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Liaise with brokers and third-party service providers to ensure compliant and accurate documentation for import and export activities.
- Administer export control requirements including license applications, bill of materials (BOM) screening, and recordkeeping to support regional export compliance programs.
- Maintain organized and compliant records for import/export activities, free trade agreements, manufacturer’s affidavits, certificates of origin, and other required documentation.
- Support trade compliance automation initiatives, system testing, and process optimization to improve data accuracy, visibility, and efficiency across trade operations.
Required Experience & Education
- Post-secondary education in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or equivalent credential preferred.
- Customs Broker License, CITT, or CIFFA designation preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in customs operations, trade compliance, or import/export management within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated success in managing complex trade processes and implementing compliance improvements.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian, U.S., and international customs regulations and export controls.
- Strong understanding of free trade agreements (USMCA, CETA, etc.) and global trade legislation.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and work independently.
- Effective communicator with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ERP systems; experience with trade compliance automation tools is an asset.
- Ability to travel internationally as required.
