Against the Current: One Team Member’s Wild Commute to Work
At Husky Technologies™, some commutes are just different. For Scott Mouser, based at our Milton, Vermont Campus, getting to work isn’t about beating traffic, it’s about crossing a river, paddling through changing weather, and walking through forest and meadow to reach the plant.
How Scott Mouser’s Daily Kayak Trek Reflects Adaptability, Resilience, and a Deep Connection to Nature
For Scott, the “three-season commute” by kayak and foot is more than just a creative way to get to work. It’s a personal ritual shaped by resilience, love for nature, and a touch of adventure.
From Water to Work
Scott’s unique commute began when he started exploring Husky’s undeveloped land near Lake Arrowhead, enjoying its trail network and quiet surroundings. The idea of paddling across the river emerged after he and his wife purchased a small kayak in March 2020, offering a simple, direct, and peaceful way to reach Husky.
“I’m fortunate that Husky owns such a large stretch of minimally developed land,” Scott says. “It allows me to paddle across and walk to the plant through woods and meadow, something I’m very grateful for, every day.”
The walk from the shoreline up to Husky’s salt-shed road is about 500 meters, followed by a short distance to the plant.
Nature as a Daily Companion
The river may be calm some days, challenging on others, but it’s never dull.
“Every day is different when you’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” Scott says. “You definitely don’t get bored or blasé about getting to or from work.”
There are no shortcuts here. After landing his kayak on Husky’s private shoreline along Lake Arrowhead, he props it against a tree, grabs his paddle and life vest, and begins a scenic hike uphill through forest and meadow to the plant.
“Pretty much anyone who sees me arrive or leave knows I boat and walk. I’m always carrying the paddle!”
Safety, Simplicity and a Bit of Mystery
Scott takes precautions: wearing outerwear to discourage ticks, staying mindful of storms, and enjoying the trail with a deep sense of awareness.
He often shares stories with his wife about wildlife and sounds he encounters. One of the most unusual? A mysterious “Bzzzt!” sound he hears while walking at night in early April, like a zip-tie being pulled tight. After some sleuthing, he and his wife matched the sound to the nocturnal call of the American woodcock.
And before heading home each night?
“I call my wife before I leave, just to let her know I’m on the way. It’s part of the routine.”
A Commute That Reflects the Husky Spirit
Scott’s approach to commuting mirrors what we value at Husky: creativity, mindfulness, and a willingness to adapt. His story is a powerful reminder that sustainability isn’t just a corporate value, it’s something we live out in individual choices, too.
Through rivers, trails, seasons, and years, Scott’s commute reminds us that there are many ways to show up and sometimes, the road to work isn’t a road at all.
