DÜSSELDORF, Germany – With the help of Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., G-Mag International, a division of Magna International, is producing lightweight automotive parts made of magnesium. Using injection molded magnesium, instead of aluminium or steel, offers dramatic weight savings that result in vehicles which consume less fuel and generate less CO2.
Magnesium is suitable for a variety of automotive parts including motor housings, electronics enclosures, steering wheels, and seat structures.
“Everyone in the automotive market is looking for innovative ways to produce lighter, less expensive parts,” said Paul Gingl, General Manager, G-Mag. “We’ve been working with Husky since 2002 to achieve this goal. They were instrumental in helping us understand the potential of magnesium. We now have several highly productive HyMET systems that produce lightweight, low cost, high quality parts.”
Husky’s HyMET systems produce superior magnesium parts at lower costs. This is achieved through an innovative process that combines the principles of injection molding with those of die casting. Magnesium’s unique properties, coupled with the benefits of metal molding technology, open new possibilities for the production of lightweight metal components. Benefits of magnesium molding include:
Lower component costs
- Reduced secondary operations
- Thinner walls
- Less scrap
- Faster cycle times
- Higher uptimes
- Higher ductility
- Lower porosity
- Better surface finish
- Ability to mold to tight tolerances
- Safe and clean
- Elimination of toxic cover gases
- Energy efficient
“We understand the pressures in the automotive industry to create lighter parts without sacrificing quality or increasing costs,” says Karl-Heinz Hoeffert, Husky’s Business Manager, Automotive. “Our focus is finding the best solution for each customer and each application. We are fortunate to have a range of technologies to offer, including metal molding, in-line compounding, glazing and our overall expertise in creating lightweight parts.”
