    • Husky and Kortec offer new multi-layer option on standard HyPET preform systems

      For release 2007-07-04

BOLTON, Ontario -- Husky Injection Molding Systems is working with Kortec Inc. to offer standard HyPET preform systems that can be upgraded to full Kortec multi-layer capability. With this new option, preform molders now have the opportunity to better manage their mix of mono-layer and multi-layer preform systems by deferring a portion of the required investment in multi-layer capacity until they have a specific demand.

      Kortec-ready HyPET preform system features

The Kortec-ready option will include a special stationary platen and machine base, upgrades to the electrical and hydraulic systems, modifications to machine controls, and other items not found on a standard HyPET system. These features allow for a quick and easy field upgrade to the Kortec multi-layer system.

When converters are ready to upgrade to a multi-layer system, the co-injection upgrade package will include the necessary machine components from Husky, Kortec’s co-injection hot runner system, integration, and process development/optimization support from Kortec’s multi-layer preform experts.

“With the Kortec-ready system, preform molders can now quickly and easily upgrade from a mono-layer system to multi-layer system when the need arises,” explained John Kermet, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Kortec. “This option provides molders with a flexible way to adapt new technologies as the industry advances.”

Improvements in barrier technologies have led to an increased use of PET for products such as small carbonated soft drink bottles, beer bottles, wine bottles, and other oxygen sensitive beverage containers. Barrier technologies offer the advantage of enabling lightweighting to levels that would otherwise not be possible for these applications. The savings resulting from this lightweighting alone can often be enough to offset the costs associated with adding the barrier to the bottle.

“The Kortec-ready concept is a great example of how we are working with our partners to increase PET’s addressable market,” said Craig Reynolds, Husky’s market manager responsible for barrier technologies. “There has been renewed development activity in barrier enhancing technologies because of the advantage of enhanced lightweighting and lower costs that these technologies offer. The Kortec-ready HyPET systems provide customers with an affordable, staged entry into this growing market.”
